Jack Hutton’s Ragtime Calendar 2011

Jack HuttonGrand International Ragtime/Jasstime Festival, Alexandria Bay, N.Y., May 27, 28, 29

This is the 21st time that Jack has been invited to perform at this wonderful festival. It was founded by the late“Ragtime Bob” Darch in the early 1990s and continues to feature some of the best ragtime and jazz performers on this continent. The festival will begin late Friday afternoon, May 27, and continues non-stop until Sunday afternoon at the Bonnie Castle Resort. Listeners, who come from both Canada and the U.S,. can go back and forth between two quite different venues – a relaxed saloon and a nearby concert room. Jack, who received the Pel and Betty Bell-Smith “Ragtime Bob” Darch Memorial Award at the 2006 festival, will be playing a mixture of classic ragtime (Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb), silent movie music, plus his trademark stride piano repertoire (Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Willie “the Lion” Smith). His weekend will include a special set of Dick Hyman compositions, George Gerswin piano roll transcriptions and a sing-along set showing how ragtime and barbershop music came together (“Play That Barbershop Chord”!). A 1919 SILENT MOVIE, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, COMES BACK TO LIFE.
August 18, Thursday, 8 p.m., Clevelands House, Minett, Muskoka

Jack and his wife, Linda, will be re-creating the long-lost 1919 silent movie, “Anne of Green Gables”, on Thursday, August 18th, at an historic Muskoka lodge, Clevelands House, that is roughly 220 kilometres north of Toronto (google “Clevelands House, Muskoka” for directions).

The evening is part of the summer-long concert and theatre program sponsored by the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival. To learn more, go to the Festival’s website: www.artsinmuskoka.com

It took Jack and Linda more than seven years to create this Powerpoint presentation, using many sources that included reviews of the time and documents at the U.S. Library of Congress. Dick Hyman was of great help to Jack in locating silent movie music that would have been played for the movie. Jack begins the presentation by demonstrating what silent movie pianists played in 1919.

Jack and Linda got rave reactions from international L.M. Montgomery scholars and fans when they made their presentation at an L.M. Montgomery conference located at the University of Prince Edward Island in 2008. Among those present were scholars from Iran, Turkey, Japan and other parts of the globe.

As you listen to Linda’s narration and accompanied by Jack’s totally authentic piano background, you will feel right back there in an old silent movie theatre. Why not make plans to make this a Muskoka holiday? Book your own get-away accommodation at Clevelands House or nearby.

For the full background behind the 1919 movie, including an unsolved Hollywood murder, look at the Mary Miles Minter page on this website.

PS The photo of Jack and Linda was taken during a presentation to the Stayner Historical Society in 2009.
