Let Bala’s Museum help you plan a “perfectly scrumptious” Anne of Green Gables birthday party.

Old-fashioned games, such as ones run during the Avonlea Sunday School Picnic, will be sure to please your guests:

Egg-on-a-spoon race requires soup spoons and hard-boiled eggs. Bala’s Museum recommends brown eggs to be authentic to Anne’s era. Don’t forget a small rope or line for the finish line. (Contestants must not hold the egg while running!)

Three-legged race requires only strips of fabric about 3 feet long to tie the contestants’ legs together. You may want 2 volunteers to hold the finish line and decide who comes 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Sack races give a whole new meaning to hopping! Inquire at the produce counter of your grocery store to see if they will save burlap bags for you. Don’t forget to cheer the contestants on.

An Anne hat with braids makes a lovely photo op for the guests. Have your digital camera ready to get shots of each girl wearing the Anne hat. Yes, we sell Anne hats @ $15.95 (curly bangs included!).

We have inexpensive Anne postcards (75 cents each) that can be used for invitations. You may want to suggest that guests come costumed as one of Anne’s friends or classmates. A prize could be given for the best costume.

Anne of Green Gables Birthday Party Refreshments

Young guests will appreciate dainty tea sandwiches, cookies, raspberry cordial and - of course! - ice cream.

Raspberry juice is an easy way to make raspberry cordial. Just add one teaspoon of lemon juice to re-constituted raspberry juice. Delicious!

Cookies in the shape of a puffed sleeved dress (we sell the cookie cutter at the right for $2.99) will be an instant hit. Bake ahead gingerbread cookies and let the guests decorate their cookies with coloured icing in an icing decorating gun.
